Hand planing is a common tool used in the production of traditional antique furniture. It consists of a planer blade and a planer. The planer blade is forged from metal, and the planer is made of wood.

The process of manual planing is the process in which the planer blade continuously cuts the wood during the forward movement of the planer. Planing or processing the surface of the wood is called planing. Wood planing after drawing lines, chiseling and sawing tenon is called clean material. After the furniture structure is assembled, the overall planing and smoothing is called net light.

In the process of continuous cutting of wood by the planer blade, the greater friction generated by the wood will counteract the cutting edge of the planer blade, which makes the planer blade heat and dull. If the wood is harder, the cutting edge of the planer will become dull faster. If there are many debris on the surface of the wood, it can also make the sharpness of the planer blade dull. Therefore, when choosing a planer blade, choose a blade with good rigidity and heat treatment. In fact, when the planer blade is forged, the blade body is made of ordinary carbon steel (large iron content), and the blade is forged with a thin layer of tool steel quenching and bonding, after being machined flat and trimmed, and then heat treated. The part will be moderately soft and hard, ready for use.

If the quenching is too hard after heat treatment, the planer blade is rigid and hard to sharpen, and it is easy to break and break when encountering hard objects. After the heat treatment, the quenching is too soft, the planer blade is soft and easy to curl, and it cannot be used for a long time, and the blade will quickly become dull. Therefore, the pros and cons of the planer blade is best observed after sharpening the planer blade. For a good planer blade, the cutting edge is forged into thin steel, which is thin and uniform and shiny. The bottom iron of the blade body is dark gray, and the quenched bonding of the blade body and the cutting edge appears very solid. Note that: the bottom iron and the edge steel of the inferior cutting edge are dull or shiny. In both cases, the planer blade is not easy to sharpen.
